I produced the attached sheet in answer to this query on Mumsnet. This is a skeleton solution with not much by way of formatting or layout and doesn't have the usual amount of documentation or instructions, but if you are reasonably confident in Excel you should be able to use it to generate a summary which links in to any number of workbooks which have the same layout as each other.

Note that it must be saved in the same directory as the linked workbooks and you will need to enable macros.
